The Problem with Cloud Inference
Every API call to a cloud-hosted LLM sends your data across network boundaries. For organizations handling PII, medical records, or classified documents, this is a non-starter. Zero-trust inference means designing systems where no data leaves your security perimeter — ever.
Architecture Principles
A zero-trust inference pipeline follows three core principles:
- Data sovereignty: All processing happens within your controlled environment
- Minimal surface area: Only the inference engine touches raw data
- Verifiable isolation: Every component boundary is auditable
Model Quantization for On-Premise
Running full-precision models on-premise often requires expensive GPU clusters. Quantization reduces model size by 50-75% with minimal quality loss, making deployment feasible on standard server hardware.
The most effective strategy we’ve found is GPTQ 4-bit quantization with group size 128. This preserves over 99% of the original model’s performance while reducing memory requirements by 4x.
Encrypted Memory Management
Even with local deployment, memory contents can be vulnerable. We implement encrypted swap and locked memory pages to ensure model weights and intermediate activations never touch unencrypted disk storage.
Network Isolation
The inference server should run in a completely isolated network segment with no outbound connectivity. Input data enters through a one-way gateway, and only sanitized outputs leave the secure zone.
